Computers are awesome! They've made life much easier, faster, and more productive in many ways. Yay for computers. But, as we know, they have their downsides, too.
One downside of living in this computer age is the amount of time we spend sitting. Judging from the response to THIS POST about the effects too much sitting can have on our bodies, this is an issue a lot of us deal with.
So, what can we do about it?
It turns out, it may not take much to counteract spending long periods in our chairs. A recent article from CNN highlights a study showing how a little activity can go a long way.

If this (or something like it) is your view most days, here are a few ideas.
Walk for 5 minutes - Five minutes every half hour or so is great. The good news is even walking under two miles an hour, which is more like meandering for most people, can help. How many times a day are you making trips to refill your water or coffee, use the bathroom, going to a coworkers office, or taking required rest and meal breaks? All those brief times out of our chairs add up.
Move however you can for a minute - If regularly being away from your desk for five minutes won't fly in your company culture, even one minute out of an hour can reduce blood pressure. You can stand and sit repeatedly like you're doing squats for a minute. You could stay seated, lift your feet, and move them back and forth or put your hands together in front of you and press and release them over and over for a minute. The key is to find a way to engage some muscles and do that. Use your imagination.
Dance break! - If music is your thing and your work environment is conducive, put on a song and dance.
Stretching - Even if all you can do is sit at your desk and stretch, that's better than staying sedentary.
